10 tips for the best holiday in Tenerife

If you’re planning a holiday in Tenerife, then you might find these 10 tips I have to give you useful.

  1. Don’t buy all inclusive packages. There are so many things to do and see in Tenerife, that you shouldn’t be trapped inside a hotel all day.
  2. Do your own research before you decide on where to stay in Tenerife during your holiday. I always recommend the most quiet areas like Callao Salvaje, Los Gigantes or even the Medano area. I know many tourists prefer Playa las Americas, but you won’t find anything authentic there.
  3. Rent a car and go out to explore. I would advise you to book a car from a local company, since the prices are much lower than the ones you’ll get from the big international companies. It’s true that their cars are usually not as new and pretty, but as long as it’s working fine, why not save some money?
  4. Go and eat fresh fish on the East coast. In small villages such as San Miguel de Tajao you will find authentic restaurants that serve fresh fish and seafood. If you go in these small villages you will pay less for your meal that in the bigger towns and you will see that many locals come here to eat also.
  5. Go visit the north of the island and discover the Anaga forest. Not many tourists come here, but it would be a shame not to see the beauties in the area during your holiday in Tenerife.
  6. Apply for a permit if you want to climb on mount Teide. If you want to go to the top, you have to book online on the official website https://www.reservasparquesnacionales.es/real/ParquesNac/index.aspx  There is a limited number or people that can go up every day, so make sure to book ahead for the day you want, so you don’t regret it later.
  7. Try the local fruit, but don’t buy them in the big supermarkets. Instead, try to go to local fruit shops, called Fruterias in Spanish. There is a famous Fruteria in Adeje, where you will find lots of delicious fruits.
  8. Experience the Carnival at least once in your lifetime. The carnival here is the second largest in the world, but you can see more info in our previous article here.
  9. If you want to see also the island of La Gomera, take more than one day to discover it. Many people take the ferry in the morning and get back to Tenerife in the evening, but I recommend that you take at least 2 nights there and go out and explore on your own.
  10. Learn at least a few Spanish words. If you want to get out of the touristic areas and interact with locals, then you should know some Spanish words and expressions. People that live in places like Garachico, where there are many locals, don’t usually speak English, so it would be nice of you to be able to speak a bit of their language.

These are my advices for a better holiday in Tenerife. It’s not rocket science, most of them I think that are basic common sense. I encourage you to go out and make your own plans, wonder around and discover everything this beautiful island has to offer.

I’ll end this article with a nice clip of Tenerife, that will hopefully inspire you to come here and fall in love with the scenery, the people and all the great food!
